Self-tapes are now the default audition language. So the goal isn’t to “get it done.”

The goal is to deliver a tape that is easy to watch, easy to cast, and hard to forget.

Performance checklist
  • Do you know what you want in the scene?

  • Are you listening as actively as you speak?

  • Are your choices simple and specific?

  • Could someone understand your take with the sound low?

Technical checklist (quick wins)

  • Eye line: just off-lens, consistent

  • Framing: mid-chest to head (unless instructed)

  • Lighting: soft, even, face-first

  • Sound: close mic if possible; no room echo

  • Background: plain, uncluttered

  • Wardrobe: character-leaning, not costume

Reader checklist
  • Strong, neutral delivery

  • Not competing with you

  • Keeps the pace alive

  • Helps you do your best work

The one upgrade most actors need

A repeatable process.

If you don’t have a reliable sequence for prep, you’ll rely on luck.A solid self-tape process turns nerves into steps.

Your best tapes aren’t your most emotional.T hey’re your clearest, most truthful, most watchable.
