An Introduction to the Meisner Technique

Date: TBC
Time: 10.00am–5.00pm
Booking terms: No refunds. Bookings are non-transferable.

This one-day introductory workshop offers actors practical experience and insight into key elements of Sanford Meisner’s Technique, with a strong emphasis on truthful, responsive and connected performance.

The Meisner Technique provides a distinctive approach to preparation and performance, encouraging actors to work truthfully from moment to moment rather than anticipating or manufacturing a result. The work explores how we connect with fellow actors, respond instinctively and create organic, believable and engaging choices.

Participants will explore how individuality, behaviour, listening and the meaning behind the spoken word can contribute to performance truth.

Previous knowledge of Stanislavski’s system may be useful but is not essential.

Areas of Study

  • Repetition Exercises – understanding their purpose and practical application

  • Motivated Action – exploring emotional struggle, behaviour and truthful response

  • Working with Text – practical approaches to line learning and scene development

  • Application in Performance – remaining present, responsive and avoiding anticipation

  • Theory into Practice – understanding the principles of Meisner and applying them practically to performance

The workshop combines explanation, practical exercises and scene work, allowing participants to experience the technique rather than simply study it theoretically.

Included:

  • All workshop notes and materials

  • Certificate of completion

A short scripted scene will be sent to participants approximately 1–2 weeks before the workshop for preparation.
